We have so many excuses, yes excuses, as to why we aren’t doing the things that we need to do and more importantly, the things that we want to do. Trust me, I know. I’ve made more than my fair share of excuses over the years, but no more. Ain’t nobody got time for that! Life is too short and too precious to be messing around with excuses. You know how they say, “If you tell the truth, you never have to remember anything”? Well, I say if you stop making excuses you will never have to deal with the “what if’s”, because YOU DID IT. We MUST take responsibility for our own lives, our happiness, our impact, our dreams, etc.
Now, of course, this is just the opinion of one colored poet who considered giving up when enough wasn’t enough. So, please feel free to take this bit of information with you for future reference or you can simply leave it here where you found it. Whatever you decide to do with it is perfectly okay with me. Trust me, I’m an artist and I’m sensitive about my ish however, I am not THAT sensitive.
Now, down to the nitty gritty. Let’s address a few of these common excuses.
So, you don’t know where to begin and even if you knew where to begin you probably don’t have what you need to do so. Well, the best place to start working on your dreams is right where you are with whatever resources you have on hand. For instance, my magazine S.L.A.M.M., LLC (Support Local Artists Movement Magazine) is a dream of mine that I made a reality.
Remember, at the moment my money is “misty” at best so, I didn’t have money to get a graphic designer, no money to pay writers or photographers, no money to print, etc. Shoot, I had absolutely NO CLUE how to even start a magazine. I just had an idea for a name and a concept and I ran with it! I used the resources that I had. I did my research and just started. I designed it, I did the layout, I did the interviews, I found an online printer, etc. There is so much you can learn from building a plane while you’re flying it. Use what you have to get what you want out of life, to achieve your dreams and to get where you want to be. It is not necessary to be an expert in something before you begin working on it, it is only necessary that you begin. If you never even begin you are doing yourself a great disservice and ain’t nobody got time for that!
So, it’s a lack of time that’s the problem. Let me let you in on a little secret…We all have the same number of hours in a day, 24. GASP! Crazy right? I know! It doesn’t fluctuate. There aren’t 24 hours on Monday and then 14 hours on Tuesday and a surprise number of hours on Saturday and Sunday. It doesn’t matter if you’re Talib Kweli or this little bird chirping outside of my window. All of our days are the same length. It’s not about “finding the time”. Time is not lost and it cannot be misplaced. It’s about managing your time wisely and properly.
We all find the time to do the things that we really want to do. If you don’t want to do it, you find a reason not to. For instance, my dining room table is a HOT mess at the moment. It’s currently being used as my creative space so; there are papers, candles, notebooks, empty ink cartridges…there is even a Kodak Funsaver camera on here. What’s that all about? Do they even develop film anymore? Anyway, do I need to organize this sucker? Of course I do. Do I really want to do it? Nope! Not at all.
The idea of tackling this linebacker does not tickle my pickle at all. My reason for not doing it is that it’s just going to get all discombobulated again anyway so, why bother. Therefore, it hasn’t been done. EVERYTHING else in my apt is neat and tidy EXCEPT for my dining room table. But, of course now…I’m going to do it because it’s messing with my peace of mind and my excuse is just that, an excuse and what?…Ain’t nobody got time for that!
Let me tackle just one more common excuse before I give your precious eyeballs a rest. You don’t have a car. This is a valid reason for not doing SOME things but then again, not really. Now, I quite literally just got a vehicle. Prior to having a vehicle, CT Transit was my besty and you could catch me using my “LEGSus” on a daily basis. On a good day, you could even catch me jammin’ on the corner while waiting for the walk signal. I proposed a new position (Social Media Marketing/Public Relations Manager) be created for the school district in which I work and the district accepted it. Can you say “dream job”? I mean, I’m getting paid to do what I do on a daily basis anyway! Winning!
Wayment, this position requires me to go from school-to-school on an almost daily basis. Cool. There was one thing…I did not have a vehicle when I started the position, which meant I would either have to walk from campus to campus, take the bus or find a ride. I chose to walk. I proposed the position. I wanted the position. I got the position. I walked my behind off! The fact that I had to walk 2+ miles (one way) from one campus to the next did not phase me, because what? I wanted to do it! Point, blank, period. You don’t have to have a Ferrari to chase your dreams. This isn’t “Fast & Furious”. This is real life. Don’t just chase your dreams…catch those bad boys and do what you have to do to hang on to them. Don’t let go at the first sign of resistance. Ain’t nobody got time for that!
I’m going to step off of my soap box now. Just remember, you don’t need the things you don’t have to start working towards your dreams. Stop wasting time thinking this way. You have everything you need to start. EVERYTHING. You have one life…You can only do this one time. Go for the gusto baby! Run tell that!
Love & Light.
